The Toothpick Carnival

The Toothpick Carnival highlights the remarkable work of inmate William Jennings-Bryan Burke, known as Billy Burke. During his final years at Folsom State Prison, Burke used toothpicks, a small knife, glue, memory, and imagination to create an elaborate carnival display. The best-known feature is an eight-foot motorized Ferris wheel made from a quarter million toothpicks. This exhibit demonstrates creativity, patience, and ingenuity within the restrictions of prison life.
